System requirements

Here╒s what you need to use Savant:
Ñ Any Macintosh computer including the Macintosh Plus or newer. It will not work on a Macintosh 128K, a Macintosh 512K, or Macintosh XL. Savant runs on a Macintosh 512KE with extra memory installed, but the 512KE╒s serial connectors do not support hardware handshaking. You can choose to run Savant without hardware handshaking however.
Ñ Apple System Software 6.0.5 or newer. It is compatible with both MultiFinder and System 7, and is 32 bit, virtual memory, and cache clean.
Ñ At least 512K of spare memory. That is, at least 512K of free memory available after you have subtracted the memory that the System software, system extensions, and other applications use.
Ñ Any TNC that implements the KISS mode, or the PacketMac Modem from Sigma Design Associates used with Aaron Wohl╒s SoftKiss v1.4 or newer.
Ñ A radio to connect your TNC or modem to.
Ñ A printer if you want to be able to print your sessions.
Ñ A hard drive is recommended, but not required.

Installing Savant Demo
********************
1. Using the Finder, copy the Savant 1.0.2 demo program to your destination disk (or hard drive).
2. If you are using a TNC that has KISS mode, you first need to put your TNC into KISS mode before Savant will work with it. See "Setting up your TNC".
3. If you are using Sigma Design Associates' PacketMac Modem, or a packet modem from a different vendor, you need to install SoftKiss. To find out how to obtain SoftKiss, see "Using the PacketMac Modem and SoftKiss" below. To install it, simply drag the SoftKiss icon to your System Folder. If you are running System 7, you will be asked if you want this installed in the Control Panels folder. Click OK. Then restart your computer. If you are using System 6, open the Control Panels DA and select the SoftKiss control panel. If you are using System 7, double╨click the SoftKiss control panel, which will be in the Control Panels folder in the System Folder. Click the KISS mode button of the serial port that you want to use.

Setting up your TNC
*******************
Savant requires your TNC to be in KISS mode. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) is a simple communications protocol for talking between your computer and TNC. Almost every TNC on the market supports the KISS mode. Check your TNC manual for how to put your TNC into KISS mode. It╒s usually a simple command sequence like:
Ñ KISS ON
Ñ RESET
╨or╨
Ñ INTF KISS
Ñ RESET

Ñ KISS ON
The KISS protocol also imposes certain communications parameters. Most newer TNCs set these up for you automatically when you go into KISS mode, but some do not. Consult your TNC manual to find out for sure.
The required settings are:
Ñ no parity
Ñ 8 data bits
Ñ 1 stop bit
Ñ hardware handshaking on
Ñ software handshaking off
Savant 1.0.2 and Savant 1.0.2 Demo can try to put your TNC into KISS mode for you at startup, and take it back out of KISS mode when you quit. You need to tell Savant what commands are necessary to do this. The first time you run Savant, chose ╥TNC Preferences╔╙ from the Options menu. In this dialog, set up the necessary commands for Savant to send to your TNC at startup. Also take note of the check box setting at the bottom of the dialog. If you have Savant put your TNC into KISS mode at startup, you should also set it to take your TNC out of KISS mode when you quit. The next time you start Savant, it will send these commands to your TNC.
A special cable is required to provide hardware handshaking with your TNC. You can get cables like this from any computer store. They are usually identified as high speed modem cables. If you don╒t have a cable that can support hardware handshaking, don╒t panic. It is possible to operate without this cable, but you may lose some characters which will require packets to be resent. In the worst case, you will lose some characters that aren╒t noticed as being missing to Savant or your TNC.

Using the PacketMac Modem and SoftKiss
**************************************
If, instead of a TNC, you are using the PacketMac Modem, you will need to get a copy of SoftKiss, version 1.4 or newer (version 1.9 or newer recommended). SoftKiss is a serial port driver which provides a KISS interface for the PacketMac modem. You can get SoftKiss from any major online service (CompuServe, America Online, etc) in the ham radio user╒s group. Or send us a diskette with return postage and we will copy it for you.
You now need to connect your modem to your computer and configure SoftKiss (read the SoftKiss documentation for how to configure it). Make sure your PacketMac Modem is operating correctly by using the HyperCard stacks provided with the kit. Savant automatically sets the communications parameters in SoftKiss version 1.4 or newer.
